Sporting Superstitions Dealt Serious Blow Over 1-2 Weekend

The sporting sunshine did not shine all that brightly on your editor’s collective sports teams this weekend. The failure started on Friday night as my Tampa Bay Lightning lost another disappointing contest. Yet the main dissapointment of the weekend occurred in Atlanta as my Gators, winners of 22 straight contests were vanquished by the Alabama Crimson Tide.

I hold myself personally responsible for Florida’s loss that knocked them out of the National title game picture for good. Florida had won two of the last three national championships and was looking to make college football history, but I didn’t do my part. I dutifully wore my good luck orange t-shirt but not my lucky white UF hat. Despite not having my patented chedderwurst I did have two small lucky bourbon meyers. Obviously the unlucky orange hat and lack of chedderwurst meant the small amount of bourbon meyers not effective in pulling the Gators to victory and a trip to Pasadena. When I arrived at my parents house to watch the game my father was already pounding shots of Frangelico (good luck practice) and even that was not enough to pull through the orange and blue. I think this contributed to Urban Meyer’s hospitalization for dehydration. This football game will deal a heavy blow to my sporting superstitions. I guess that means I can by a new shirt for next season. When I got home that night I angrily/sadly poured the rest of the lemonade and sweet tea down the drain, as they will no longer be needed for the foreseeable future.

My Jaguars were able to salvage a decent weekend for me by beating the Houston Texans while I was there live. Myself and a handful of friends witnessed the Jags beat the Texans and keep themselves in the hunt for an AFC wildcard playoff berth. Too bad only 42,000 of my fellow Jacksonvillians were there to witness it. My friends Will and Reggie were doing their best to fire up what crowd there actually was with constant chants of “DUUUUUUVVVVVVAAAAAAALLLL.” So things look to be heading in the right directions for my pro-football squad.

I don’t think there will be that many more Footballtown TSE posts until August of next year, and I’ll get back to discussing the latest in the battle for Afghanistan and health care reform. These two political matters may prove to be just as disappointing as the SEC title game
