Republicans Praying For 10% Unemployment
Our chief political adviser sent me an account of a speech that Charles Krauthammer gave regarding politics today. The person whom wrote the account stated that Krauthammer predicted a Republican victory in 2012 if the unemployment rate is at 10.5%. Many Republicans have been writing the political obituary of President Obama with glee over the last two months as his approval rating has dropped back to the percentage that voted for him in November. The same Republicans that said President Bush’s sub 30% ratings mattered not, are the ones saying that President Obama is dead in the water politically, at 49% to 52%. The same Republicans that excoriated Democrats because they believed they were rooting for failure in Iraq for political gain, seem to be praying for 10% unemployment. Below is my email response back.
I agree in a sense. Unemployment was always projected to reach 10% and we will more than likely be at that rate come the 2010 elections despite the fact that the country will be in full fledged recovery at that point. The Democrats are politically vulnerable but at the same time they were at their max growth seat wise in the Senate and House anyway. As you know aside from once in the last century I believe the party in the White House loses seats in the House every time. The Democrats may even lose about 5 seats in the senate but they should barely hold on, if only for the fact that they had such gigantic majorities. I fail to see anything aside from a double dip recession that would have unemployment at 10% all the way to the summer of 2012 though. But yeah, if it is there they are toast. But as I’ve said to some other people, it may end up like 1996 and 2004. Sure the President may be vulnerable, but at that point if the other party doesn’t run a decent candidate against him he’ll still win. Who exactly is waiting in the wings to take the office from Obama? Palin? Gingrich? Bobby Jindal?
