The Sunshine Empire

Reading the Twitter feeds of several conservatives that I follow a reoccurring joke is that Obama “inherited” all his problems and caused none.  On it’s face it’s wryly funny, but it belies a sudden sea change in the attitudes of how we evaluate the President based on whether there is an R or a D next to his name.  When George W. Bush came to power before the attacks of 9/11 the common refrain from The President and his conservative allies was that he inherited the “Clinton Recession.”  Now after President Obama came to power with a trillion dollar deficit (that’s right conservatives, there was not a balanced budget and surpluses in place like when Bush came in) and job losses of 700,000 per month, the characterization that he inherited a mess is mocked.  Conservatives who had been running away from their President for years prior to the January 2009 inaugural suddenly had a case of selective amnesia.  Suddenly the TARP program put together by the Bush administration was a program put in place by President Obama, months before he was even elected.  Where when early in the Bush administration the “Clinton recession” had ended and job growth was anemic, conservatives admonished people for being unpatriotic for expecting the economy to turn around overnight, they now say after 6 months in the job President Obama has personally destroyed what was a wonderful economy.  Why the sudden change?  When democrats and progressives challenged the Bush administration agenda they were called obstructionist and unpatriotic.  Yet now republican senators openly admit that they are challenging President Obama’s health care reform plans only to “break” him politically.

Are republicans in need of a CAT scan for politically induced amnesia or head trauma, or was more time needed for Bush because he was kind of slow?
