Socialism In America? Where’s The Beef?
I’m watching Fareed Zakaria GPS on CNN and he mentions something that not many of the political chicken-little sky is falling tea party crowd ever seem to notice. If President Obama was really the insidious secret socialist wanting to take any opportunity he can to take over business, why when months ago the general assumption was that the Federal Government was going to nationalize banks did he choose not to? As far as I can see the Federal government has an almost microscopic stake in the entirety of corporate America, and has declined the opportunity to completely nationalize any company. Many warning of the creep of socialism point to the just passed energy bill and it’s “cap-and-trade” scheme as another side. But the majority of them voted for John McCain in last year’s election and he had proposed a cap-and-trade scheme as well. Then what do we have left, taxes? Let’s look at that one. A vast majority of Americans have seen their taxes cut under the current Obama budget and the marginal rate was increased by 3%. Maybe we could talk spending, but no side of this debate has any credibility and I am concerned mostly with this when it comes to threats that face this country. The vast majority of the differences in the last Bush budget and the first Obama budget comes down to putting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on budget. Bush never included the items in any of the budgets he submitted to Congress, preferring to have them slipped in with continuing resolutions mid-year. Obama has them on budget. Spending has really not changed with a Republican and Democratic Presidents, nor with Democratic or Republican Congresses. So where is this creep of socialism?
