On Racism And Primates And Progress And Change

Last week I wrote a piece stating that I felt the New York Post chimp cartoon was not racist and that anybody who saw racism was looking for it. I asked several African-American friends of mine their opinions of the cartoon. They seemed to agree that the cartoonist was not racist, and that the cartoonists were not intending to be racist, but should have understood that they could get the kind of reaction they did with using such a racially charged metaphor such as a primate. I have to say that I understand their view, and that it proves that those who said racial issues were dead with the election of Barack Obama are wrong. There is much work to do in moving past our racial divisions, but much progress has been made.
