On Political Nuance In Cartoons About Crazy Apes
The whole country is up in arms about a political cartoonist who used the recent story of the amok chimp in Connecticut to compare to the recent stimulus bill battle in Congress. After this chimpanzee went crazy and tore a poor woman’s face off, the insane animal was shot by police called to the scene. To the rational mind the cartoonist was stating that the stimulus bill was written by an insane monkey, and that now someone else would have to write another bill. Those purposely looking for racism, found it. Now I live just south of the deep south in Florida, so I know and have seen racism. This is not it. People will then counter that obviously the chimp is a metaphor for the President, but wrong again. One of the biggest criticisms of the bill is that it was not written at all by the President or his staff, but by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. If you are seeing anything other than a person saying that the stimulus bill was written by an insane animal and comparing it to a news story in Connecticut, then you need to go back to watching television cartoons and finish that coloring book up.
New Attorney General Eric Holder is also talking about race, badly. He gave a speech recently that when dealing with race American had been and still is a nation of cowards. Now I will say that this nation has done a bad job of dealing with race, but today I think it’s more like a dysfunctional family than cowardice. Whether he’s right or not, it’s a stupid comment to make.

I’ve been warning people about the chimp menace for years, but they won’t listen. This is what happens, people. Open your fucking eyes.
On a serious note, we’ve really cheapened the ideas of cowardice and bravery. When people are lauded for bravery for having voicing a commonly held opinion or chastised for cowardice over, well, nothing, the terms have no useful meaning.
The fact is that there is not a lack of talk about race in this country. In fact, it seems like all we fucking do is talk about race. There is a lack of honest back-and-forth since if you deviate from the accepted view on race you’re dubbed a bigot, but that’s a whole other can of worms.
