Republicans Find Long Lost Fiscal Responsibility
House Republicans today are expressing grave concern about the size of the stimulus package being proposed by the Obama administration, as well they should. Watching an economist talk on the prospects on Fareed Zakaria’s show on CNN this Sunday the comparison to Japan in the ’90′s showed that massive stimulus is a mixed bag. It may prevent a depression but it is by no means a quick fix either. But after destroying the surplus from the ’90′s and rubber stamping all of Bush’s budget busting budgets that resulted in the largest deficits in history, they don’t have much of a fiscal responsibility leg to stand on. Where was this attitude when the $600 billion Medicare Drug entitlement was passed? Where was this attitude as Darth Cheney was saying “deficits don’t matter.” Now I happen to agree with them but their newfound interest in fiscal responsibility would have been nice back before the Democrats took control.
