Yes We Can Mass-Market This Phrase

By now everyone inside and outside the political word know the chant of Obama supporters, “Yes We Can.” I’ve always found the premise interesting, as if the chanter is being told “No you cant.” But it was an effective marketing tool. I personally was an Obama supporter, but really couldn’t bring myself to chant along at the Obama rally I attended in September. But what is even more interesting is how the chant is making it’s way into product marketing. There is a local car dealership commercial that implores the watcher that, yes they can get financing. Yes they can get a new car. Yes they can get low payments. I don’t think there’s any coincidence. Watching CNN this morning they played a commercial from an underwriter with the tag line that change happenz (sic due to their name beginning with the letter z). This all began with MSNBC changing their tag line to “The Power Of Change.” The phrase was good politics, but the post marketing phase is fascinating.
