TSE Election Preview 2008: Panel Opinions With The Race Coming To A Close
With election night almost just a week away, we wanted to get a feeling of what people’s mindset is going into such a historic night. We know how most people are set in who they are going to vote for, except those still wishing to get in on that wild CNN squiggly line thing. We thought we would bring you some thoughts from our All-Star panel.
First, our good friend Crustle:
This election cycle has been brutally long, absurdly spun, divisive, contentious, and downright exhausting. I will be SO RELIEVED when I wake up to see the calendar say “November 5!” Of course, as I am an ardent liberal, I hope Obama will win, but Nov. 5 will bring me relief no matter what. However, it hasn’t all been for naught. As has been repeated ad nauseum, this election is historic, and something about it is truly thrilling. There will be mundane results from it: if McCain wins, his supporters may be disappointed that he is no maverick, and if Obama wins, his supporters may be disappointed that he is no savior. But there will be exceptional results from this election, too: we will either be flung from our economic roller coaster to a gruesome fall or we will safely glide back to stability. We could come crashing down on the world stage like a broken marionette or we could rise up and reclaim some good will and global favor. There will be wars and rumors of wars, and perhaps either a total ecological melt-down concluding in The Rapture, or some kind of truly revolutionary energy policies. Who knows. Who knows which candidate will bring what, but no one will be able to look back at this time in history and say, “meh. Boring.”
Next up, our good friend LibertarianmindedinFL:
No CHANGE in Obama or McCain.
This year there is no change offered by either of the big party candidates it’s going to be more big government no matter which one gets elected. Both are promising new government programs that they will create and fund out of nothing more than promises. Neither the Democrat candidate or the Republican candidate offers any change. True change would be electing a third party candidate. The Democrats and the Republicans are just two sides of the same coin and with this coin its heads we lose and tails we lose. By electing the two major parties what have we gotten? Bigger Deficits, War, Loss of Civil Liberties, and more inflation. By electing either Obama or McCain that is what will continue. You may feel you are voting for the lesser of two evils but remember you are still voting for EVIL.
Last but not least, our good friend Biggus The Rickus:
Generally, I find the practice of comparing elections to sporting contests idiotic. While I will tecnically not be doing so here, I’ll be skirting the edge. For those of you who follow the National Footballing League you may remember last season, and more specifically, the New England Patriots’ run at an undefeated season (for those of you who don’t follow it, it is a rare accomplishment). As the weeks went by and New England piled up more wins fans of the team became more and more insufferable. They exuded a sense of smug superiority/entitlement to this historical feat. There were even crackpot conspiracy theories about the league trying to fuck them over at various times. In the end, they were in the Super Bowl poised to revel in their smug douchiness and give a giant foam middle finger to all us “hatahs.” And the Patriots lost. They were deflated, and I was ecstatic. What has this to do with politics? Well, many Obama supporters have taken on the same smug characteristics of those New England fans of a year ago, and I want to see their souls equally crushed. For the rest of you, no hard feelings.
We thank all of them for their contribution.
