On The Ever Shifting Ayers Strategy In The McCain Campaign

According to news reports, Senator John McCain is planning on bringing up the Bill Ayers line of attack. Apparently the comments of Senator Obama saying he was surprised McCain did not bring it up to his face was taken as a dare by the Arizona Republican. Now whether you find the mention of Bill Ayers entirely relevant or not, if you look at the time line of his use of this line of attack that worked so well for Hillary Clinton, it just makes McCain look even more erratic. After month of eschewing such attacks, he brought them up because his campaign said publicly that if they kept speaking about the economy they would lose. Senator McCain then stated before Presidential Debate Night II: Electric Boogaloo, that he would “Take the gloves off” with Obama. He then did not mention the Ayers connection at all. After the debate he and his attack princess started the Ayers line yet again. Yet another change in tact came in the last week when the McCain campaign stated that they would no longer be using the Ayers situation. The next day they were up with advertising that in fact did use the Ayers connection. McCain then shifted to good cop, taking the mike from a homeless lady that wandered into one of his town halls and called Obama an Arab. With the heavy history of campaign plants at town halls this political season I would not be surprised if she was part of the good cop swing strategy for McCain, but I think his statement to her was genuine. Yet after all the move back from the angry campaign stops, McCain now says he will be mentioning Ayers to Obama’s face.

McCain’s erratic campaigning should give anyone pause when considering his stability. Go ahead and bring up Ayers.
