On Hurricanes And Political Implications

Hurricane Gustav is approaching New Orleans, and a good friend of The Sunshine Empire is going to ride the storm out. A former member of our brain-trust, who is responsible for many of the features of this site that have been added during it’s initial construction, returned to his hometown of New Orleans some five or six months ago. Though my uncle rode out Hurricane Andrew in 1992, things will be very dangerous and our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his wife.

With Gustav coming, and the ghosts of Katrina still haunting the GOP, it is interesting to see the party’s reaction. The tragedy of Katrina was really the moment where President Bush’s second term fell apart. He was not universally loved, and had just gone through the Harriet Myers embarrassment, but things were not as bad as they are now. Katrina, whether you feel Bush was responsible or not, is were things went drastically south for the President. Initial reports had the Republicans contemplating postponing the beginning of their convention, which is slated to start Monday. Conflicting reports have been out about whether the President will even speak to the convention. The clear political implication is that the public will draw to many comparisons to what happened in 2005, the party, and today. In addition to that, understanding that he could never draw the crowd Barack Obama did, rumors are floating now that John McCain could accept the Republican nomination live from the potential disaster zone. Now the move, if serious, would be both horribly gimicky, and clever politics. Either way, we’ll be live blogging every night of the convention this week.

I’m going to have to stop, as Homeland Security Secretary Skeletor is coming on CNN. But please keep our good friend Duprizzle and his wife in your thoughts and prayers.
