Later today I’ll get back to full time politics with the start of the Democratic National Convention coming. It looks like the smart money is starting to coalesce around our early call of Joe Biden for the Democrats, and Ken Doll Romney on the Republican side. I know that if Romney ends up the choice is it only to solidify the social conservatives, but what puzzles me is why that is the case. Romney has quite openly changed his positions on abortion and gays, and it’s almost as if social conservatives will not accept someone who is openly pro-abortion like former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge, but will accept someone that will just tell them he’s anti-abortion. Aside from that I only see him being good at fund raising, and with McCain taking Federal matching funds that won’t be needed. I just see Biden ripping him apart in the one Vice Presidential debate. Someone like Ridge or Guiliani even would be more than equal to the task as a good running mate, but they are in favor of abortion so they will never be considered. It would have been fun as well to see the Republican National Convention turn into their version of Chicago in ’68.
