The Sunshine Empire

Some time ago Senator McCain made some issue with the fact that Senator Obama had not visited Iraq, so he had no basis for arguing anything.  He had not been able to take a cozy stroll through a Baghdad market (courtesy of hundreds of Marines and helicopters) like he had.  But when Senator Obama planned a foreign trip that included a stop in Iraq, and the press decided that it was worthy of coverage, McCain suddenly started to cry that Senator Obama was merely grandstanding.  But that was not enough for the presumptive Republican nominee.  Reuters is reporting that Senator McCain has publicly discussed details of when Senator Obama will be in Iraq.  This is a serious breech of security.  Now I have often joked about when the news media proclaim a “surprise” visit to Iraq, because all of them are, but there is a reason that these things are secret.  There’s a reason that the President of The United States could only drop into a secret air base in the middle of nowhere in Anbar Province the last time he dropped by.  This is also the kind of situation that Republicans would be screaming bloody murder about where it the other way around, and Fox News would be running it 24/7.  I could see Sean Hannity leading off HANNITY and colmes with it, “Does Barack Obama want to assasinate John McCain?  We’ll discuss that with John Bolton and Karl Rove next on HANNITY and colmes.”

I don’t believe that John McCain said what he said in an effort to cause physical harm to Obama, as he was just trying to take a little of the media thunder away from what will be an overly Obama covered newsweek.  But it’s damn reckless and their are better ways of prying the spotlite away from your rival.
