Wall-E vs. Idiocracy
Neil Postman, in his book Amusing Ourselves To Death, has a conversation about the comparison between Brave New World and 1984. Postman states that after 1984 (the book was written in the mid-’80′s) society patted itself on the back and was relieved that the world did not turn out like that novel. But the irony was that the world pretty much did become Brave New World, with society enslaved by it’s seeking of pleasure.
Today it is a pleasure of mine to read apoplectic conservative media and they are in full indignantcy over the new Disney Pixar Movie Wall-e. They state that the image of humanity having to live in space stations due to overpopulation and too much waste is nothing but liberal environmentalist propaganda. This is from the same group that advised us of the gay Teletubbie, but that’s not the point to be made. Last night I watched a movie that seems more akin to what we are in for in the future. Idiocracy is more of an apt description of the dumbing down of America and the world. Mankind basically consumed with wrestling, monster trucks and sports drinks, and covered in advertisements. These days Tony Stewart, and the Obama family interview is more news than the Iranian missile launches or the price of gas. The dumbing down of America will be a far greater damage to the world than some pollution and environmentalists. The politics of the situation demand it.
