The Sunshine Empire

This point has been made across the blog world, but I wanted to chime in on this matter of John McCain and torture. First, any use of the words John McCain and Maverick in the same sentence fully disproves any mainstream media liberal bias that can be claimed. The political life of John McCain has been replete with comebacks and reincarnations.  The Senator has been moving the right sharply to appease the restive wing-nut base, and despite his constant support for anti-torture legislation he voted against the Defense bill in the Senate which would have banned water torture against detainees. His vote was immaterial to the debate as the bill passed anyway, yet he has lost any and all rights to bring up the fact that he was tortured as a POW during the Vietnam war. Any media outlet that uses the tired maverick phrase in association with the Senator could only be displaying a conservative bias. Some wing-nuts would say the media salivation over McCain is actually liberal bias since conservatives hate him, but that belies the point that the Senator has blatantly flip-flopped his positions on a multitude of issues in a way that would make Mitt Romney and John Kerry proud. Actually, that might be the reason why Mitt endorsed the Senator yesterday. With his political fortunes mired in malaise with the conservative movement, the Senator has been re-making himself as a political poster child for the “Bush was awesome” set.

McCain has been changing rapidly from the man that I was willing to cast a vote for in 2000 on a multitude of issues. After calling Jerry Falwell an agent of intolerance, he gladly spoke at his university’s commencement and hugged him with glee. Let’s not forget his brave stand against the deficit busting Bush tax cuts for the rich, that he now thinks are super keen. The man once occupied a position of principal in the Republican party, which he is returning in exchange for the favor of Rush Limbaugh.
