Does $800 x 2 = $1600?

With the domestic economy not as boisterous as most wing-nuts would have us believe, the President put out his endorsement of a stimulus package of tax rebates similar to the $300 checks given in the early part of the decade to recover from what they called, “The Clinton Recession.” Now that the Bush recession is coming on, they released a proposal that would as they say, “give $800 to individuals, and $1600 to couples.” If you are coming out of Kindergarten and do not understand basic math I understand, but why is it needed to specify the $1600 for couples? I understand that a couple consists of two people, and two times $800 is $1600. Isn’t that just like saying tuna fish, as tuna kinda implies fish. I’m guessing they’ll spend $35 million just to send me another letter telling me that this windfall will be coming. I’ll gladly spend my money, but the entire idea is foolish and a distraction from the fundamental problems of income inequity in our economy.  The politics of it would be too messy.

  1. Yeah, I thought it the first go ’round, and I’ll think it again if they send out checks, “instead of giving me 300 bucks which will help me a little, why don’t you combine the entire gross sum that you’re sending out to everyone and build some schools in cities where schools are needed/feed some hungry/shelter some homeless/fight AIDS/fight cancer/improve port security/or generally just do something USEFUL for the ENTIRE country, you morons.” But they don’t tend to follow my thinking…
