The Annapolis Conference, and the strange transformation of Bashar Assad

I know that many blogs have commented on this, but I had to join in calling the treatment of the media between the Pelosi trip to Syria, and the Bush Administration including them in the peace talks, is quite amazing.  The Bush Administration said talking to Assad was akin to rewarding a terrorist.  But they are trumpeting from the mountaintops about what a victory it was to have him at the peace talks in Maryland.

While we here believe that the Syrians being at the conference gives it great legitimacy and gives more of a chance for a comprehensive solution to the Arab-Israeli struggle, but Assad has to be good or bad in Bush’s mind view.  I don’t understand how he is both evil terrorist, and partner for peace in a matter of months.  We here hope that this conference is the first step in the right direction, and really give the Bush team credit for putting it together.  But why couldn’t he have done this say two years ago?
