The political ramifications of poll movement and commentary aside
The primaries are finally relevant for the political commentary class to speak about, and the topic of the day is the dip in Hillary Clinton’s dominant numbers in Iowa and New Hampshire. I am NO fan of Hillary’s, even though I don’t think she would be the disaster and devil that the right makes her out to be as President. When her husband was elected in 1992 there were Republicans predicting a depression that would dwarf the 1930′s. But the rise in Obama and Richardson is nothing more than the general American electorate starting to pay attention when the really should be, close to the election. Hell, Huckabee is storming forward in the Republican polls in those states as well because the conventional wisdom of white evangelicals voting for a pro-abortion, pro-gay rights former Mayor of New York City is just as absurd as it sounds.
But this is not a sign of sudden weakness in the Hillary camp. That’s not to say it is the tank that the national liberal media cabal made it out to be over the course of the summer, but it’s not to say that her rival coming up a tick means she is going to crash and burn Howard Dean style either. The press lives in the moment and that moment is far from liberal bent. In all reality Hillary is not the “liberal” candidate. The liberals of the party are scattered among Dennis, Edwards, and Ron Paul due to his Iraq war stance. Most Republicans are quietly saying that Hillary is surprisingly one whom they can work with.
All this means that the process has just really begun, despite what the vultures in the media will try to force down your gullet. Obama is on the move, and Hillary is still sitting on a mountain of cash bigger than his and he still cannot break through in a state other than Corn City and Chowder nation. When it comes down to the big boy states like Florida and Michigan the sheep will graze toward Clinton and Guiliani. We’ll have to start dealing with this mess even before the golf season begins. I can’t wait for 2012.
