Reid needs to prove his resolve while Bush fiddles.
I just cannot shake the feeling that Pakistan is going down the wrong road that Iran once took. With the State of Emergency in Pakistan the tribal areas in Waziristan are virtually a separate terrorist nation state. All the while our idiot boy king president says our enemies are in Iraq.
But what is the solution to the situation? Fuck if I know. Musharaff was making a half-hearted effort to fight some of the groups in the tribal areas, but he had also formed alliances with them. But more and more the United States is seen as choosing Pakistan’s leaders by the regular everyday Pakistani, and then the resentment increases and the chances of getting into Waziristan and getting bin Ladin decrease. Bhutto has seemed to be a fairly democratic and level headed leader, but if that country disintegrates then the specter of terror becomes real. The doomsday that the Bush administration’s efforts were meant to prevent, may happen by the very actions themselves.
One thing is certain, the only way to stop the economic and social bleeding that this is causing is to defund the war. Revoke the authorization as well. Why have these things not been done. Watching the political commentary only gives you mixed reasoning. The Democrats are too dickless because they seem to think that Bush’s probable retort is that they want to leave the troops behind. No matter that that would never happen, and that there is plenty of money to get our shit out of that fucking hell hole. The Republicans can’t end this because the minute they do they’ll have lost a war. They will have their already tattered image on national security blown away in the winds of change. Republicans are perfectly happy to let this go on forever.
Harry Reid has said that there will be no more money given to the president until he includes a time line. The President will refuse as always, and then the real test begins. Does he have the balls to stand up to the supposedly liberal media that would swallow the “they’ll leave them behind” rhetoric. Like they would be Hernan Cortez’s soldiers watching the ships burn. Defund the war or you are complicit in it. Take your pick. You are either with us or against us.
