A return to smoke filled back rooms?

I was reading a post on Crooks And Liars today and something occurred to me. I’ve been reading Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ’72 and it talks of the beginning of using primaries to pick the Presidential nominees. Could this front loading of primaries to almost 2007 mean an eventual reverse to the old way of having party leaders pick the candidates? The two parties are making idle threats to not recognize certain state delegations if they do not comply with their schedule.
