Sunday with Karl and the Democrats
Karl Rove made an appearance on all of the Sunday talk shows, but I was only able to watch him on Face The Nation. One of the most telling moments in the interview is when Bob asked him why he was making a television blitz after being under wraps, and he said in effect that it was not his decision. He claimed that he was not a divide and conquer type and claimed that the President’s policy initiatives where not dead because of environmental elements of a Democratic bill heading through Congress. George W. Bush is saving the environment, I think that proves his Presidency is over. He also incorrectly pointed out that Hillary Clinton has the highest unfavorable rating of any Presidential candidate in history. This was completely debunked by the New York Times this week, but that’s never stopped a talking point from the Bushies.
I’m watching the Democratic debate on This Week, and I wanted to give a few impressions as I am watching. They where just asked whether they feel if prayer can prevent natural disaster, and I was impressed with many of the answers. In 2002 in the age of the Evangelical theocracy it would have been unheard of to hear their answers, but I will say they match mine. They for the most part said God is their private business, they do pray, but they would not expect to change the course of nature because of it. Mike Gravel pointed out that it’s usually the churchgoing evangelical with the “Blessed” bumper sticker that is all for bombing some brown country. There was also an interesting series of exchanges about how to leave Iraq. Some want out now, and those who initially voted for it where more for a slower withdrawal. Dennis pointed out that the Senate was controlled by Democrats in 2003, which is wrong as they lost in in the 2002 elections. But his point that they where all for it then and not now is still valid.
Clinton and Richardson look a little shaky and Edwards and Obama look strong. Dennis is starting to sound elitist and snobby. I get and appreciate most of his points but he seems to be laying the indignant thing a little to heavy for my taste. Edwards and Clinton are explaining their, “Mistakes” in voting for the Iraq war bill in 2003. Richardson seems to come back and sound great with his answer on that question. Chris Dodd said he regrets voting to revoke Habeas Corpus. It does seem that they are allowing Chris Dodd to talk this time. They all seem to keep to saying that they somewhat agree with each other on certain issues, unlike the Republican focus on discussing the Democratic candidates. It seems at times that Democratic candidates get discussed as much in the Republican debate as they do the Democratic one. This from the party of, or now out of ideas.
