Fat residual checks or diners in Manchester

For some time I have known that eventual Senator and Law and Order heartthrob Fred Thompson had been the one who asked the question during the Watergate hearings that had revealed the existence of Nixon’s secret taping system.  He seemed pretty good in The Hunt For Red October, and a fair minded Senator from what I remembered.  Yet apparently he told the White House that it had been discovered before he had asked the question to Nixon aide Alexander Butterfield.  He was a spy for a President who broke the law.  Media Matters had this piece on the evil liberal media totally avoiding this while calling him the daring minority council during the Congressional hearings.

Another thing that had my spidey sense tingling was the fact that he was to have announced his candidacy for the Presidency at the beginning of July, and it is now a month later and he’s still “unofficial.”  This is happening for one of two reasons.  He is either trying to skirt Federal election law, or his is trying to keep receiving residuals for his Law and Order re-runs until the last moment.  NBC had announced that they would pull all re-runs with Thompson the minute he declared as a candidate for the Oval Office.  Thompson is nothing but a Washington lawyer from Hollywood with little principle acting the folksy Tennessee boy.  Yet he played a President in a movie once, and that is enough experience for most Americans, so he’ll give Rudy a run.  More comforting is the fact that Mitt Romney is about to discover that American will refuse to vote for him not because of his Mormonism, but because he’s a fake plastic asshole.  Sadly, the one candidate for the Republican nomination with the most integrity is dying a slow political death with his wagon fused to the joyride that is George W. Bush.  I just wish Alan Keyes was in this race.

Not to say that those with D’s next to their name are any paragons of virtue.  I like what Obama says but he’s even more green that old Dubya was when he was elected and look where a pretty face and charming speech get you.   Clinton is capable, but I just cringe at the notion of a Bush or a Clinton having been in the Executive Branch from 1981 to 2012.  Mike Gravel eats integrity sandwiches for breakfast every morning.  God Bless America.
